22 MacDougal Street
(Janet Goodman/Bill Maier)

The floor was painted red, just a mattress for a bed

No kitchen, no den, no phone

One room and bath was all I had and I was lucky to afford that

In my first apartment on my own

I had to do the dishes in the tub

But everything was good enough

22 MacDougal Street

Didn't look like much, but it was home to me

Little brick building built on dreams

22 MacDougal Street

Music through the walls, Bronco Billy across the hall

He was gonna change the world with his guitar

And that pretty girl in number 9, I used to help her learn her lines

We all thought she'd be a movie star

We were waiting tables and fixing drinks

Settin' our sights on bigger things

22 MacDougal Street

Didn't have much but we had everything

Little brick building filled with dreams

22 MacDougal Street

So young and so committed

So sure where we were headed

But we were strugglin' to survive

Some held onto hope

Some dreams went up in smoke

One by one we said good-bye

22 MacDougal Street

I still see it in my dreams

That little brick building lives inside of me
